Beginning Jazz Woodwind Studies for Clarinet and Saxophones

SkyLeap Home > Publications > Beginning Jazz Woodwind Studies

Kyle Coughlin’s Beginning Jazz Woodwind Studies are books designed to help students learn jazz style by covering the basics of jazz rhythm and articulation. The music in the books is simple enough for beginners to play. Since the books focus on basic jazz concepts and not fast finger technique, they are also helpful for intermediate students who want to learn how to play jazz and swing.
Even though the books focus on educational music, the etudes are catchy and fun to play. Please read the material below for more information, and feel free to contact us if you have any other questions.

Frequently Asked Questions:

For whom are the Beginning Jazz Woodwind Studies best suited?

The books are written so that clarinetists and saxophonists who have been studying for about one year can learn the basics of jazz rhythm and articulation. Highly motivated students who have been playing for several months will also be able to work with the book and recordings. These jazz books are not just limited to beginners and can be used by students of all ages who are interested in learning how to swing.

Is one year of study too early to start students with jazz?

It's never too early (or too late) to begin learning jazz. It is important for students to understand that eighth notes are played one way in classical music and another way in jazz. Once the students comprehend the difference, they usually can switch from jazz to classical styles without difficulty.

I am a teacher and my background is entirely in classical music. I don’t really know how to teach jazz. Can I work with my students using these books?

The book and the audio master classes teach all the basic information that the students need to learn jazz styles. By listening to the recordings and playing along with them, the students will develop their ability to swing and play jazz articulations.
